Modern Slavery Reporting Bill

Jurisdiction

For products sold in New Zealand

Law Summary

Potential future UK legislation may strengthen the Modern Slavery Act’s reporting. Proposed (but not yet enacted) changes include mandating specific report content, setting fixed deadlines, introducing penalties for non-compliance, and possibly extending requirements to public bodies to enhance supply chain transparency.

Law Obligation

Prepare a modern slavery statement for each reporting period and submit it to the Ministry of Business of Innovation and Employment within 6 months of the end of the reporting period. The statement must include:

  • The structure, operations, and supply chains of the reporting entity
  • Description of any goods produced in New Zealand
  • Details and origins of goods imported into New Zealand
  • Actions taken to assess and mitigate modern slavery risks in production
  • The reporting entity’s policies regarding modern slavery
  • Description of employee training on modern slavery

The modern slavery statements must be easily accessible to the public at no charge. This is done by publishing them on a website managed by the entity, ensuring straightforward public access.
