Universal PFAS Restriction Proposal

Jurisdiction

For products sold in the EU

Law Summary

This proposal, initiated by several EU Member States under REACH, aims to broadly restrict thousands of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It seeks to ban their manufacture, use, and placing on the market unless uses are deemed essential, due to their persistence and health/environmental risks. (Status as of May 2025: Scientific committees (ECHA’s RAC & SEAC) are evaluating, final decision by Commission will follow).

Law Obligation

  • Companies must phase out PFAS use in products and manufacturing.
  • Organisations must find alternatives to PFAS chemicals.
  • Businesses must ensure compliance with restriction deadlines.
